The Future

Updated: Sep 12, 2025

Am I the only one kind of worried about the future? My favorite term I’ve read recently is that we will become a, “Post-work society.” I actually really like that idea! Although I think some people really benefit from structure and would lose their identity without a 9 to 5. Not me though; I’m one of those creative types.

“Post work society,” makes me think of Star Trek: The Next Generation, a show I grew up watching on public television as a child in the 1900s :D 1990s to be exact. In the show, future Earth has become a utopian society where money no longer exists, people work for fun/purpose/duty, and needs for food/clothing are met through a device called a replicator that creates anything you wish with the touch of a button. This all sounds great, but I suspect the transition to (is that socialism?) from our current state of capitalism may not be so smooth, and that’s the part I worry about a little bit.

I may not live to see full Star Trek-level utopia, but the speed with which technology has changed human existence in my lifetime does make me smile. We used to play a game where we put a bottle cap on the sidewalk and tried to move it toward the opponent by bouncing a basketball on it. Over and over in the summer sun. I’m sure kids still make up games like that, but there is so much other stuff now too. For now, I am really enjoying my astrology AI chatbot, and hoping it doesn’t somehow murder me someday.
